MHS MinuteMENread Program Honored for Going Beyond the Game

The Memorial High School football program's effort to encourage more students to read is earning them accolades off the field.

During halftime of the 2025 San Antonio Sports All-Star game, SA Sports recognized the MinuteMENread program with the "Beyond the Game" award.

"Having Valero and SA Sports recognize MinuteMENread makes us aware that we are role models on and off the football field," says MHS Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach Paul Ortega.

MinuteMENread is now in its third season at Memorial High School. Every month, football players visit different Edgewood ISD elementary schools to read to younger students. Coach Ortega hopes this recognition shows the student-athletes that they can play a role in making both their community and the world a better place.

"Being recognized on such a large stage shows our athletes the importance of serving others," says Ortega. "Too many times, we get caught up in what we can get out of this world rather than what we can give back."

Students involved in MinuteMENread want younger students to know that school can be fun, is a safe place, and that 'school work' can look different on some days. For the high school students, it's a chance to learn lessons they may not get from sitting in a classroom or reading a textbook.

"I want our students to understand the importance and power of helping others," says Coach Ortega. "We are able to use football to show kids the value of reading and education."
